Awake Project’s Breathing Performer in NEW YORK

This is a chance for performers, dancers, directors and devisers to experience

the exciting new approach to theatre making developed by the international Awake Project in New York City.

Since 2007 The Awake Ensemble has been developing an approach to theatre training and performance founded upon an investigation of breath and all aspects of rhythm.

The rhythm of the music: beat, tempo, time, pulse and swing

The rhythm of language: meter, measure, stress, accent and cadence

The rhythm of daily life: pattern, flow, tempo, duration, counter point

The rhythm of connection: timing, distance direction listening

Christopher’s approach to training is both passionate and playful and seeks to release and extend the performer’s capabilities in fundamental areas of the craft of performing. By deepening the participant’s connection with the essential elements of rhythm and breath his workshops aims to enhance and awaken the creativity in the participants.

The Breathing Performer draws on sources including folklore, traditional song, hip-hop, jazz, poetic texts and personal stories. All of the work is designed to develop and deepen an understanding of the ‘self’, allowing for greater risks to be taken and to engage as much of the performer as possible in the creation of character and story.

Participants will leave this workshop with a greater understanding of how breath and rhythm can function as the foundation for ensemble theatre and personal creativity.

Awake Project directs Grand Finale at RUM festival

RUM Festival in Västerås -En upplevelse utöver det vanliga! Workshops under helgen för alla kulturutövare med en avslutande konsert under söndagen den 22 maj.
Awake Project delar deltagarna i 5 grupper. Sång, Dans, Rytm, Instrument, och Teater.
Som förberedelse får deltagarna ett musikstycke i början av April. Detta stycke innehåller koreografi och text, sång och instrument. Detta för att alla ska vara förberedda vid ankomst till Västerås. Noterna som skickas ut varar i ca 15 minuter och innehåller körsång, blås, stråkar, solosång, rytm och percussion samt gitarr och keyboard.
Stycket, som ska övas in, innehåller Svensk folksång, balkanblås, Grekisk Dityramb och Black Eyed Peas’ “Pump it”¨. I Awake’s team ingår 10 proffessionella aktörer från alla områden som under festivalens workshops kommer leda deltagarna i utförandet.
Lördagen 21:a maj övar vi i grupperna under dagen i olika lokaler. Awake är två ledare/grupp. Söndag morgon samlar vi grupperna och förbereder oss för finalkonserten där alla får uppleva hur deras specifika uppdrag passar i hop med resten och hur vi genom att ha ofantligt roligt kommer lyfta taket i energi och musicerande.

Summer School at The North Wall in Oxford

A three-week residency at The North Wall Arts Centre, which will create an ensemble comprising some of the country’s most talented youth theatre artists. Through national auditions ‘The Company at The North Wall’ will be formed from emerging actors, performers,  directors, designers and stage technicians aged between 17-24. The residency is completely free of charge to the participants and includes accommodation and meals.

The ensemble consisting of twenty individuals will be lead by all six members of the Awake Team, headed up by Christopher Sivertsen, artistic director and founder of Awake Project, who will be working in collaboration with Lucy Maycock, the Artistic Director of The North Wall and dramaturge on the project.  The participants in ‘The Company at The North Wall’ will be guided by each member of the Awake Team in their specialist areas of stage art (text, music, song, acrobatics and circus, dance and rhythms). With the director and dramaturge, the ensemble will devise, rehearse and publicly perform an original and unique piece of theatre at The North Wall.

Auditions

Auditions will involve a group workshop with Christopher Sivertsen lasting approximately 30 minutes, you will then be asked to deliver a pre-prepared monologue (maximum duration 3 minutes).
